Won't people mess about on the Opinionmeters?
Yes they will, but Opinionmeter’s analysis software negates
all of these surveys. The machines identify respondents who consider
their answers and those who don’t.
Will the novelty of using an Opinionmeter
wear off, and affect response rates?
Quite the opposite. We have found that over time usage actually
increases. Customers increasingly become aware that the Opinionmeter
is an opportunity to give feedback. Using the Opinionmeter becomes
learnt behaviour. This is particularly prevalent where the results
and appropriate remedial action is fed back to the customer. In
a recent project, responses rose from 1,000 to 3,000 per week over
6 months

Are the Opinionmeters robust enough?
Opinionmeters have been placed in train stations, tube stations,
motorway services, factories, universities, housing estates, supermarkets
and hospitals. All of these were unsupervised and encountered no
problems. We have never had one stolen!
Doesn't self-selection bias the
sample?
All forms of research demand a willingness of the respondent to
participate so there is always an element of self-selection. London
Underground, during the Opinionmeter survey, undertook other survey
methods to compare the data. They also compared the results to their
own internal information and experience. They found Opinionmeter
to be most accurate. Indeed they were stunned by the number of respondents
particularly - busy commuters.Because Opinionmeter generates such
high level of responses statistical confidence levels are extremely
high. Should any demographic bias take place this can be adjusted
through weightings (please note this has yet to happen).Furthermore
because Opinionmeter records response at the point of experience,
it does not suffer the survey quality downturn of delayed responses
such as Internet and postal surveys.
Will senior citizens use the Opinionmeter?
Yes. In comparative surveys with paper based and face-to-face interviews
there was no significant decrease in percentages of users. Because
the Opinionmeter is so simple to use there is no techno phobia.
This problem does currently exist with touch screens and mobile
phones. The Opinionmeter is ergonomically designed for abled and
disabled users.
Some people may try to manipulate
the survey. Won't that bias the results?
No. The Opinionmeter software identifies those seeking to manipulate
the sample. In a recent survey for a transport provider Opinionmeter
provided a validated sample report of over 2,000 respondents. An
additional 1,000 responses were taken out of the survey. Of these
68 were manipulations, and a further 21 were staff!
